LUNASOL Selection de Chocolat Eyes 03 Chocolat Raisin

LUNASOL Selection de Chocolat Eyes 03 Chocolat Raisin

With Halloween come and gone for the year, the house awash with mini chocolate candy bars, it seemed like the right time to share my Halloween loot with you.

This was a release last year from the Japanese brand Lunasol in a chocolate themed offering of products.  Among were eye shadow quads, with whimsical names referring to chocolate such as Chocolat Blanc, Chocolat Amer and this one, Chocolat Raisin.  Link to product information on the Lunasol website here.  Probably the warmer tones of Chocolat Amer would probably have been easier and more flattering to wear, but I am always drawn to cooler and murkier shades.  I LOVE the smoky and the cool and the purply tones of this Chocolat Raisin.

I haven't featured Lunasol on this blog really.  That's not because I haven't owned and used this brand before.  When I lived in Seoul for a few years, this (along with RMK and Shu Uemura) were the most readily available high end Japanese cosmetics brand, so I've spend a lot of time at the Lunasol counter.  Among the eye shadows that I have tried from the brand, I've found them to be generally disappointing.  I found them too full of patchy glitter and very sheer shades that applied too dry on my lids.  I also found (and still do), the various named eye shadow ranges kind of confusing.  Anyway, as I mentioned the shades of Chocolat Raisin being such Belly Bait, I ended up purchasing this one.  (As a side note, I purchased mine on Ichibankao at a gigantic markup 6600JPY, which makes this significantly more expensive SUQQU purchased from Selfridges)

I'm willing to give love another chance if you are.

I'm willing to be tantalized by finishes that are not dry and glittery looking.

I'm willing to gently wipe away the gold overspray logo and enjoy bliss.

I'm going to breathe deeply the scent of new-found lov.... wha...?

But before I do, I have to mention the distinct smell of chocolate which is disconcerting for me.  I understand scented makeup, even though it is not my preference, but food scents in eye makeup is a little weird.  It is not powerfully strong, and I suppose it's kind of cute and fits the chocolate theme, but I would much have preferred no scent, especially in a high end product.

A closer look now, shall we?

All colors are very creamy soft.  It does kick up a bit of powder with a brush, but the application on the skin isn't dry or dusty looking.  The lightest highlighting shade is slightly drier, however.  None of the shades are pigmented except for the deep brown shade.  I found the mid-tone shades (on the left side of the quad) worked best with goat hair brushes.  The grey squirrel hair bristles were too soft to pick up enough color for my taste.  The firmer goat ones seem the best route for me.

Shades description clockwise starting from the upper left pan:

  • a satin mauve grey.  It is a softly pigmented with a very pretty satin finish.  It looks near matte, but has a slow luster giving it  a very soft satin finish.  There's a slight purple tone to this shade that has a direct contrast to my cool yellow skin.
  • a shimmery light pink pearl.  Lightly pigmented, but with high luster for a very subtle highlight where you want to catch the light (center of lid, inner corner, brow bone, etc)
  • a deep, dark chocolate brown.  Warm red tone, and near matte.  It has very sparse shimmer.  This one is very pigmented (at least compared to the other shades).  I need a just a small dab with my brush to pick up enough color.
  • a lighter version of the pan above it.  It's a satin cool mauve grey.  I love this one as a main lid shade.

You can see the very elegant texture on the skin.  (and also it's very light overall pigmentation)

Do I love it?  I've been wearing this every day for a week and I feel so exceedingly office appropriate!  While not exactly exciting or crazy sexy, it's like a good and dependable steady boyfriend.  What do we do when we have a binder full of so many similar boyfriends?

When you love neutral eye shadow palettes, you tend to accumulate.  They are different, but very similar.  I find some more flattering on the eyes than others, but each are very pretty and exceedingly wearable!

Despite being so modest looking in swatches, Chocolat Raisin is pretty darn easy to wear and very versatile.  With the kind of shades to make simple gradations, smoky looks, winged out linger with the deep shade, etc., that I've been able to create various looks during a week of wear.

In terms of performance, I only wear this over a primer (mine is Nars), and it lasts moderately.  But as it isn't a pigmented palette to begin with, at the end of a work day, I have significant fading.

Here's a look from today.  I did it for you.  *heart eye emoji*

I also used MAC Face & Body Foundation in C1, SUQQU concealers, SUQQU limited edition Creamy Glow in EX-02 Kan Botan, also a discontinued THREE blush.  SUQQU Moss Green brow palette, SUQQU lash primer, and Lancome Hypnose Drama WP mascara.  I tightlined with SUQQU gel pencil in black and also in the lower waterline.

Have you tried any of the Lunasol Selection de Chocolat eye shadow palettes or any of the eye shadows from the brand?  Maybe the famous Beige Beige?  What do you think of them?

No disclosure here.  I spent a pretty penny on this quad!
